On 14 October 2025 in Sofia, bilateral political consultations were held between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria and the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs of Austria. The Bulgarian host for the consultations was Ms Gergana Karadjova, Director-General for Political Affairs. The Austrian delegation was led by Ms Hannah Liko, Director-General.
The two sides discussed current topics on the European, international and bilateral agenda, including: the Russian military aggression against Ukraine (also in the context of the Organisation for Security and Co‑operation in Europe and the recently held elections in Moldova; the situation in the Middle East; multilateral issues such as reform of the United Nations and mutual support for candidacies; and the European perspective of the Western Balkans in terms of the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy and the Council’s working methods, including decision-making processes within the European Union.
At the bilateral level, in the context of their constructive cooperation within the EU, significant alignment of positions emerged between Bulgaria and Austria on many of the issues discussed, and the two countries will seek opportunities to deepen their traditionally good relations.
