The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria, Georg Georgiev, participated in the meeting of foreign ministers within the framework of the Berlin Process, which was held on 8–9 October in Belfast under the chairmanship of the United Kingdom.
In his address, Minister Georgiev emphasised the importance of the Berlin Process as a key platform for promoting the European perspective of the Western Balkans, deepening regional cooperation and achieving real results for citizens, while respecting the principle of each candidate country’s own contributions.
“Our motto within the South‑East Europe Cooperation Process (SEECP) – ‘Compass to stability, security and sustainability’ – reflects Bulgaria’s determination to seek effective solutions to the challenges in South-East Europe, for the sake of a better future for our societies”, Minister Georgiev stated.
Among Bulgaria’s priorities, the following were highlighted:
∙ Regional connectivity, energy resilience and economic growth as drivers of human development and tools for reducing vulnerabilities;
∙ Security and resilience against hybrid threats, including through the establishment of coordinated digital frameworks, early-warning systems and enhanced public awareness;
∙ Management of migration processes through strengthened cooperation in border protection, humanitarian support, and integration policies based on solidarity and shared responsibility.
„Security in our region is not a given – it is a shared achievement that requires investment, cooperation and determination to build together a stronger and safer Europe, stated Minister Georgiev. He also emphasized the negative impact of Russia’s ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine on stability in the Western Balkans, which is being further undermined by external malign influences and hybrid activities.
In conclusion, the Bulgarian Foreign Minister called for straightening the synergy between the Berlin Process and the South-East Europe Cooperation Process (SEECP) in order to accelerate the shared path towards a stable, secure and sustainable region.
“Only together can we turn challenges into opportunities and build a common European future for the Western Balkans,” concluded Minister Georg Georgiev.
