On the occasion of the Day of the Bulgarian Diplomatic Service, Minister of Foreign Affairs Georg Georgiev delivered an address at a formal reception held at the Boyana Residence. In the presence of the President of the Republic of Bulgaria, the Prime Minister, members of the diplomatic corps, ministers, and members of parliament, Minister Georgiev underscored the importance of professionalism and continuity in Bulgaria’s foreign policy.
“From its inception to the present day – in times of peace as well as during historic upheavals – Bulgarian diplomats have consistently demonstrated their professionalism and dedication to the cause called Bulgaria,” stated Minister Georgiev, expressing his appreciation to all those who have contributed to defending the country’s interests and international standing.
In his address, the Minister highlighted key national achievements, including Bulgaria’s full accession to the Schengen area by land and the decision to join the Eurozone as of 1 January 2026. “This is a recognition of the stability of the Bulgarian economy and the outcome of long-standing, consistent efforts,” he noted. Minister Georgiev also pointed to the significant progress made towards membership in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), stating that Bulgaria is working towards receiving an accession invitation as early as 2026.
In the context of international security, the Minister reaffirmed Bulgaria’s steadfast support for Ukraine: “Russia’s aggression threatens security in Europe and globally. We stand in support of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders.”
Minister Georgiev also emphasised Bulgaria’s active role within NATO and the EU, including the decision to gradually increase defence spending to 5% of GDP by 2035, as well as the country’s contribution to strengthening stability along the Alliance’s Eastern Flank and in the Black Sea region.
He placed particular focus on the European perspective of the Western Balkans: “The European integration of the region remains our strategic priority. Progress depends on the implementation of reforms, good neighbourly relations, and adherence to the rule of law.” The Minister also stressed the importance of protecting the rights of Bulgarians and historical communities in the region. In his statement, Minister Georgiev highlighted Bulgaria’s rotating chairmanships of the Organisation of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC) and the South-East European Cooperation Process (SEECP), describing them as further evidence of the country’s active role in promoting regional stability and connectivity.
In conclusion, the Minister expressed gratitude to the diplomats and staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “The diplomatic service is an integral part of the national security system. Our ambition is to modernise and develop it. I thank you for embracing your work in the diplomatic service as both a duty and a calling,” he declared.
