Minister Georg Georgiev in London: “Bulgaria and the United Kingdom Deepen Their Strategic Partnership“

21 July 2025 News

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria, Mr Georg Georgiev, held a bilateral working meeting with the UK Foreign Secretary, Mr David Lammy, during a one-day official visit to London at the invitation of the British Government. The meeting took place within the framework of the active political dialogue between the two countries, grounded in the Joint Declaration on Strategic Partnership signed in October 2023.

The two ministers reviewed the progress made and explored future prospects for deepening their strategic partnership across key areas, including security and defence, economic and trade relations, education, science, innovation, and high technology.

“Our bilateral relations have never been more dynamic. In the fields of European security and stability, new technologies, and education, we see great potential to achieve even more ambitious results,” said Minister Georg Georgiev.

Foreign Secretary David Lammy remarked: “Bulgaria is a key partner for the United Kingdom in Europe — from Black Sea security to the advancement of cutting-edge technology. Our shared objective is clear: a safer and more prosperous continent.”

A particular focus of the talks was placed on cooperation in tackling illegal migration and combating organised crime. Foreign Secretary Lammy expressed appreciation for Bulgaria’s active role and close cooperation in these areas. “The fight against illegal migration is a shared responsibility. For Bulgaria, contributing to the security of all European citizens is a matter of honour,” Minister Georgiev affirmed.

Progress under the UK’s global initiative to reform child care, launched in Sofia in January 2025, was also high on the agenda. “Bulgaria was selected to launch this initiative because it is a model of successful reform in support of children. Your example is inspiring and proves that institutional care can be replaced by real family-based solutions,” stated Foreign Secretary Lammy. “Supporting children and families is an investment in the future. Bulgaria’s experience shows that reform is possible when there is political will and a constructive attitude towards such an essential process,” added Minister Georgiev.

The two ministers also exchanged views on current European and international issues, including the ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine and the security situation in the Black Sea region. “Bulgaria and the United Kingdom will continue to stand side by side in support of Ukraine and in our efforts to ensure regional stability,” underlined Minister Georgiev. “Our solidarity with Ukraine is unwavering — this is a struggle for the values we share with Bulgaria and with all our allies,” added Foreign Secretary David Lammy.
