The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria, Georg Georgiev, took part in a meeting with young people and representatives of youth organisations, dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the signing of the Charter of the United Nations. The event was organised by the United Nations Association of Bulgaria and took place at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”.
In his address to the youth, Minister Georgiev highlighted the significance of the UN Charter as a symbol of hope, solidarity, and a new beginning after the Second World War. He recalled that Bulgaria is celebrating 70 years as an active member of the UN – a period during which the country has consistently upheld the principles of international law, peace, human rights, and sustainable development.
In the context of today’s global challenges, Bulgaria supports the “UN80” initiative launched by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, aimed at modernising and reforming the UN system. The Minister stressed that improving the Organisation’s effectiveness is key to responding to crises and upholding its core principles – from Ukraine to the Middle East.
Our chief diplomat announced that on 23 July 2025, the country will present its Second Voluntary National Review on progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals, which includes a dedicated section authored by young people – a clear reflection of the understanding within Bulgarian institutions that youth are a driving force for change. He emphasised that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs sees young people not only as future leaders but also as active participants in the global dialogue of today.
Among the initiatives supporting youth engagement and empowerment, the Minister highlighted the “Bulgarian Youth Delegates to the UN” programme, the organisation of training seminars and diplomatic negotiation simulations, and the launch of a national student essay competition on the theme “Bulgaria in the UN: The Voice of Small and Medium-Sized States.” The winner of the competition will join the Bulgarian delegation to the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York in autumn 2025.
During the discussion, the Foreign Minister engaged in an open and sincere dialogue with the young participants on the most pressing foreign policy issues and the challenges facing the international community. “The future belongs to those who take action. Supporting young people is our commitment — and an investment in tomorrow,” Minister Georgiev concluded.
