Minister of Foreign Affairs Georg Georgiev took part in the extraordinary meeting of the European Union's Foreign Affairs Council, held in video conference format. The ministers discussed developments in the Middle East, with a focus on the military escalation between Israel and Iran.
A common position was expressed: Iran must return to fulfilling its commitments regarding the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and cooperate constructively with the International Atomic Energy Agency. A unified message was issued, calling for an end to hostilities and a return to negotiations – the only viable path toward a sustainable resolution of the Iranian nuclear issue. The European Union remains in constant contact with partners in the Middle East and the United States, as well as with Israel and Iran, in an effort to prevent further escalation of the conflict. Minister Georgiev reaffirmed Bulgaria’s support for all diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalation and the restoration of stability in the Middle East.
He expressed deep concern over the rising number of civilian casualties on both sides and emphasized that the safety of European citizens remains a top priority. In addition, the ministers exchanged information regarding consular protection for citizens and the diplomatic missions of EU Member States present in the region.
