08 May 2025 News

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Georg Georgiev, took part in the informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in the "Gymnich" format. The meeting, organised by the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union, was held in Warsaw and opened with an informal discussion with the Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, David Lammy. Together with their British counterpart, the ministers discussed a broad range of topics, including security and defence, Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, and Sudan.

In their own circle, the ministers discussed the Russian aggression against Ukraine and EU-U.S. relations. Key points of the discussion included the continuation of EU support for Ukraine, diplomatic efforts to achieve a lasting ceasefire and the necessary conditions for it, as well as maintaining sanctions pressure on Russia through a forthcoming 17th sanctions package. In the context of EU-U.S. relations, the ministers also examined opportunities for engagement with the U.S. administration.

Immediately following the "Gymnich" format meeting, the ministers participated in a working lunch with their counterparts from EU candidate and potential candidate countries, also hosted by the Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU. This discussion focused on the challenges posed by disinformation and hybrid threats, as well as the need to build institutional and societal resilience in candidate and potential candidate countries.
