07 May 2025 News

"Your role in the development of relations between Bulgaria and the USA is vital. It is an honour for me to be among you on this particularly important holiday for Bulgaria – the Day of Bravery and the celebration of the Bulgarian Armed Forces." With these words, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Georg Georgiev, addressed representatives of the Bulgarian community during his meeting with them at the Bulgarian Embassy in Washington.

Speaking before compatriots, the Minister stated that our country is working purposefully to strengthen its strategic partnership with the U.S. across all areas of mutual interest. He highlighted the enhanced cooperation in the fields of security and defence, energy, trade and economic relations, and people-to-people ties, with particular emphasis on Bulgaria’s aspiration to join the U.S. Visa Waiver Program in the near future.

During the conversation, he outlined Bulgaria’s leading foreign policy priorities, including  membership in the Eurozone, accession to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), promoting economic growth and strengthening Bulgaria's role in contributing to stability and prosperity in Southeastern Europe.

"Bulgaria makes a valuable contribution to shaping EU policies and is actively working to develop our strategic partnership with the U.S.," the Minister noted. He added that our country firmly supports strong transatlantic relations, which contribute to security and progress both regionally and globally.

In response to questions from the community, Minister Georgiev emphasised Bulgaria's consistent efforts to conclude a Social Security Agreement with the U.S. – a topic raised at every high-level meeting with the American side.

Other highlights of the conversation included the prospects for the development of the high-tech sector, enhancing the competitiveness of the economy, attracting investment, among others.

The event was held as part of Minister Georgiev's visit to Washington for his participation in the Munich Leaders Meeting.
