06 May 2025 News

"Transatlantic energy cooperation is a pillar of our shared prosperity and security. In a time of profound global uncertainty and intensifying geopolitical competition, our ability to align our energy strategies is more important than ever." This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Georg Georgiev, his address at the roundtable discussion entitled "Power in Action: Advancing Transatlantic Energy Cooperation".

The forum was held as part of the Munich Leaders Meeting in Washington, D.C., USA.

The event was opened with a speech by Minister Georg Georgiev, alongside Ms Belen Carbonell, Secretary-General of the European External Action Service (EEAS), and representatives of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

"We welcome the strategic emphasis the United States places on supporting its allies and partners through reliable energy supplies and diversification. Bulgaria views this approach as fully aligned with our European efforts to ensure energy supply security," Minister Georgiev further stated in his speech. "U.S. liquefied natural gas plays a key role in strengthening our energy security and resilience," he added.

In his address, the Foreign Minister also highlighted that Bulgaria plays an active role in enhancing energy security and connectivity in Central and Southeastern Europe, contributing to the overall resilience of the European energy system.

"Energy cooperation between Bulgaria and the United States contributes to enhancing energy security and diversification not only in our country, but also across the entire region and Europe as a whole," the Minister emphasised.

Georg Georgiev further highlighted that Bulgaria is working jointly with the United States to implement the project for the construction of Units 7 and 8 at the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant, using the advanced American AP1000 technology. This makes Bulgaria the first country in Europe to have nuclear reactors built with AP1000 technology. "This strengthens Bulgaria's role as a regional energy hub and creates excellent opportunities for Bulgarian companies, thereby promoting economic growth," Minister Georgiev further stated in his address to the forum participants.
The Munich Leaders Meeting is being held from 5 to 7 May 2025 in Washington, D.C. The discussions include around 90 high-level representatives of the governmental, private, academic and public sectors from various countries and organisations on both sides of the Atlantic. Meetings of this format provide a platform for open and informal dialogue on the transatlantic partnership and key issues of foreign policy and security, building on the work of the Munich Security Conference.
