27 September 2024 News

In the framework of his visit to New York to participate in the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, Minister Ivan Kondov also took part in the high-level meeting on the situation in Gaza and the implementation of the two-state solution as a path to a just and comprehensive peace. The meeting was hosted by the Arab League/Organization of Islamic Cooperation Ministerial Contact Group on Gaza (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kingdom of Bahrain, Republic of Egypt, Republic of Indonesia, Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Nigeria, State of Palestine, State of Qatar, Republic of Turkey, as well as the League of Arab States and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation), the EU and the Kingdom of Norway.

The forum aimed to discuss concrete measures for the implementation of the two-state solution as a path to a just and comprehensive peace in the context of the Arab Peace Initiative and relevant UN resolutions, the possibility of ending all hostilities, respect for international law and the grave humanitarian situation in Gaza and the region.

Speaking at the meeting, Kondov hailed this initiative as extremely timely in light of regional developments not only in Gaza but throughout the Middle East.

He stressed that the international community must make every effort to achieve lasting peace and stability in the Middle East, a goal that cannot be achieved through war and violence.

In his words, in order to open a political horizon for the peace process, it is necessary in the short term to focus international efforts on the inevitable challenges - de-escalation and ceasefire, immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, addressing the humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip and preventing the conflict from spreading regionally.

The meeting took place in continuation of the efforts in the direction set by the ministerial meeting on the Peace Day Effort, a format that was launched in the framework of last year's UNGA session on the initiative of the EU, the League of Arab States and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, together with Egypt and Jordan. It is expected to launch a series of follow-up practical meetings at working level in the coming months.

Bulgaria has been consistent in providing financial support to address the dire humanitarian situation in the Palestinian Authority. In April this year, the Government of the Republic of Bulgaria once again decided to allocate 200,000 euros for humanitarian aid to the civilian population in Gaza. The funds were provided through the Jordan Hashemite Charity and the Egyptian Red Crescent.
