17 April 2024 News

On 16 April 2024, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Bulgaria Mr. Alireza Irvash was summoned to a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the occasion of Iran’s attack on Israel on 14 April 2024.

During the meeting the Director General for Political Affairs Mrs. Gergana Karadjova emphasized to Ambassador Irvash that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemns Iran’s attack on Israel in the strongest terms. This unprecedented in scale and nature act is a serious threat not only to the security of the Middle East, but also poses additional severe challenges to the global security architecture.

The Director General informed the Iranian Ambassador that guided by this understanding and assessing the catastrophic consequences of a possible large-scale direct military conflict between Iran and Israel, the Bulgarian side calls for strict adherence to the fundamental principles of the UN Charter and the norms of international law.

In line with the Joint Statement of the EU and its Member States of 14 April 2024, Bulgaria called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and not take measures that could lead to further deterioration of the situation. A spiral of violence must be prevented.

The Director General informed the Ambassador of Iran that together with its international partners, Bulgaria remains actively engaged in efforts aimed at seeking opportunities for the future establishment of lasting and sustainable peace in the Middle East and restoring the political prospects for resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
