Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on public statements of politicians from the Republic of North Macedonia in the context of the election campaign in the country

06 March 2024 News

The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of North Macedonia in Sofia was summoned to a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the occasion of recent public comments by politicians from the neighbouring country and false allegations spread by them regarding the Republic of Bulgaria.

The Foreign Ministry strongly objects to the attempt to once again involve Bulgaria and our bilateral relations in the internal political debate in the Republic of North Macedonia, including in the context of the current election campaign.

Bulgaria consistently maintains a constructive tone and refrains from commenting on the constant provocations in the public space of North Macedonia. It does so with the understanding that it is necessary to ensure a constructive environment for the normal conduct of the electoral process and an environment of public calm in order to implement the necessary reforms.

Unfortunately, it is obvious that these efforts of Bulgaria are not understood and appreciated by certain factors in Skopje, who continue to use our country as an excuse for the lack of progress in front of their citizens.

We once again call on the political elite in North Macedonia to show the necessary political maturity, to make a constructive contribution to the implementation of the political commitments made in the framework of the 2022 compromise and to strictly respect the 2017 Treaty on friendship, good neighbourliness and cooperation. This is the only opportunity to achieve real progress in the country's European integration process for the benefit of its citizens.
