Mariya Gabriel: Cultural diplomacy brings nations closer together

01 March 2024 News

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mariya Gabriel was the patron of an event on the occasion of 1 March at the Embassy of Romania in Bulgaria, organized by the Ambassador of Romania H.E. Brânduşa Predescu and the Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova H.E. Anatol Cebuc.

‘Cultural diplomacy brings nations together. This is the message we sent with the Ambassadors of Romania and Moldova in Bulgaria on today's holiday — 1 March I am glad that we celebrate this bright and symbolic holiday together. Cultural heritage unites us, it is an expression of the richness of our traditions. That is why it must be preserved and valued and passed on to future generations’, Mariya Gabriel said.

The custom of tying martenitsa is known not only in Bulgaria, but also in Romania, Moldova, Albania, Greece, the Republic of North Macedonia and Serbia. In 2017 it was inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity List as a joint nomination by Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova and North Macedonia.

‘The martenitsa symbolizes traditions, history, but also the future. This is our shared custom and celebration through which we rediscover richness through diversity’, Mariya Gabriel concluded.
