Presentation of the Bulgarian candidate for Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe

Deputy Minister Irena Dimitrova presented the Bulgarian candidate for Commissioner of the Council of Europe for Human Rights, Ms Meglena Kuneva, to representatives of diplomatic missions in Sofia from member states of the Council of Europe.
Deputy Minister Dimitrova underlined the priority attention the Republic of Bulgaria pays to human rights issues in international relations. She highlighted the role of the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights in maintaining the high standards of this international organisation and ensuring its effective functioning. The Deputy Minister also highlighted the undeniable personal qualities and the extremely rich professional experience of the Bulgarian candidate, stressing the confidence of the Government of the Republic of Bulgaria that Ms. Meglena Kuneva can contribute significantly to the defence of human rights in Europe.
In turn, Ms. Meglena Kuneva presented her views on the work of the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights and answered questions from the diplomats of the Council of Europe member states accredited in Sofia.
The Republic of Bulgaria nominates for the first time a candidate for a senior position in the Council of Europe.
