The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs announces a joint initiative with women diplomats in Bulgaria for the ‘Women and Diplomacy — Ambassador for a Day’ National Competition

‘More women in foreign policy will give other young girls the confidence to build a career in diplomacy. Today, many young girls and women need more confidence in themselves to follow their dreams. We want to highlight the talents and strengths of young women because they are changing the world around us for the better,’ the Deputy Prime Minister said. This is the first ever meeting of a Bulgarian Foreign Minister with women diplomats in Sofia, which took place on 19 October this year.

The national competition is open to girls and young women aged between 14 and 25 with an interest in diplomacy. Participants are invited to submit an essay on the ‘I am a diplomat’ topic in Bulgarian and a summary of the essay in English or, if desired and possible, in French, German, Spanish, as well as Arabic, Italian, Mongolian, Romanian, Slovenian, Ukrainian, Finnish or Montenegrin.

The most convincing and influential essays will be awarded by a jury composed of Prof. Dr. Ingrid Shikova, Department of European Studies, Sofia University; Mr. Kiril Valchev, Director General of BTA and Mr. Petar Kraychev, Director General for Bilateral Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The winners in the young women's group from 18 to 25 years will have the opportunity to share a day with a female diplomat at her country's representation in Sofia, while those in the girls' group from 14 to 17 years will participate in a study visit to the National Assembly, the Council of Ministers and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The essay in Bulgarian should be up to 2 standard pages or 800 words. Abstract up to half a page or 250 words.

Essays and abstracts shall be submitted until 5 December at: [email protected].  They should be accompanied by the name of the participant and details of the age category of the girls or young women.

The winners in both categories will be announced on 8 December.

‘The aim is young girls from all over Bulgaria to learn more about working in diplomacy. It is important that we inspire more girls and women to take up the path of foreign policy and diplomacy through personal experience and example’, the Deputy Prime Minister Mariya Gabriel emphasized.
