European Commission checks procedures for issuing residence permits to workers from Bulgaria and Romania

20 February 2013 News

The European Commission reaffirms its full commitment to protecting the right of free movement of European Union citizens and its effective application in the EU. The Commission has given notice that it is carrying out an investigation into the duration of the procedures for issuing residence permits to workers from Bulgaria and Romania.

This is said in a letter from the head of the office of the Vice-President of the European Commission and European Commissioner for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship Viviane Reding to the Permanent Representative of the European Commission to Bulgaria in response to questions raised by Bulgaria about problems encountered by Bulgarian students in the United Kingdom.

“The fundamental right to freedom of movement, guaranteed by European law to citizens of the EU and members of their families, is the most appreciated right in the EU. It is understandable that European citizens feel wronged when faces with obstacles and difficulties where there should be none,” Commissioner Reding said.
