The Ministry of Foreign Affairs published the Protocol of the First meeting of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission under Art. 12 of the Treaty of Friendship, Good Neighbourliness and Cooperation between the Republic of Bulgaria and the Republic of North Macedonia, held on June 10, 2019

15 August 2022 News
In accordance with the provisions of the Protocol of the Second meeting under Art. 12 of the Treaty of Friendship, Good Neighbourliness and Cooperation, signed on July 17, 2022, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs published on its official page the Protocol of the First meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission under Art. 12, held on June 10, 2019.

With the Protocol signed in 2019, the governments of the Republic of Bulgaria and the Republic of North Macedonia accepted the proposals of the Joint Multidisciplinary Expert Commission on Historical and Educational Issues for the joint commemoration of the following personalities from the common history of both countries: St. St. Cyril and Methodius, St. Clement, St. Naum and Tsar Samuel, as well as the general principles and notes on the content of the textbooks for the 5th grade in the Republic of Bulgaria and the 6th grade in the Republic of North Macedonia (Prehistory and Old History).

In the Protocol under Art. 12 from July 17, 2022, it was agreed that, within one month, the two sides would officially publish all the results and recommendations of the work of the Joint Commission on Historical and Educational Issues to date.

The publication of the 2019 proposals, approved by both governments, is an important step towards making the public in both countries aware of the results of the Commission's work. Thus, the necessary basis is created in order to proceed with the practical implementation of another provision from the Protocol under Art. 12 from July 17, 2022 – to agree on a calendar of joint celebrations for the period 2022-2023 for the five common historical figures.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses its gratitude to the Joint Commission on Historical and Educational Issues for its work so far and encourages it to continue more intensively with its efforts, in order to complete the work on all periods of our common history, in accordance with Art. 8 para. 2 of the Treaty on Friendship, Good Neighbourliness and Cooperation.
