Director-General Maya Dobreva took part in the Indo-Pacific High-Level Dialogue

The Director-General for Political Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maya Dobreva participated in the High Level Dialogue on the Indo-Pacific, organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic on 13-14 June 2022 in Prague. The Forum is part of the programme of the forthcoming Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU and a follow-up to the Paris Ministerial Forum on Cooperation with the Indo-Pacific, held on 22 February 2022.

Representatives of more than 40 countries - foreign ministers and senior diplomats from EU Member States and the Indo-Pacific (IP), academia, international and non-governmental organisations and business - participated in the international forum in Prague.

The event was opened by the Foreign Ministers of the Czech Republic Jan Lipavský and Indonesia Retno Marsudi. Statements were also made by the Foreign Ministers of Hungary, Lithuania and East Timor, as well as the Minister of Economy and Industry of the Czech Republic and the Minister of State for Economic Security of Japan.

The Forum provided a discussion platform between EU and Indo-Pacific (IP) partners for a strategic review of key developments in both regions that have an impact on global security, trade, transport links and sustainable development. The event also helped to identify synergies between already existing cooperation initiatives between the partners.

Bulgaria participated in the discussions on the security architecture in the Indo-Pacific. According to the regulation of the discussion in the panel, the Bulgarian representative made a presentation with a focus on cooperation as a way to achieve the goal of common interest to build a new security architecture in the Indo-Pacific and countering common threats. She stressed the importance of forming coordinated messages on key issues such as respect for international law and the foundations of global order rules. In her speech, Director-General Maya Dobreva also focused on the different dimensions of the security issue - security of connectivity, digital security, and economic security. She highlighted Bulgaria’s efforts to contribute to connectivity policies between Europe and the Indo-Pacific and the opportunities for cooperation under the EU Strategy for Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific. She gave the example of the cooperation between Bulgaria and an Indo-Pacific partner country in the field of the economic dimension of security with participation in joint projects in the Western Balkans.
