20 May 2022 News

The Bulgarian Permanent Representative to the EU, Ambassador Rumen Alexandrov, is taking part in today's regular meeting of the Foreign Affairs / Development Council in Brussels. The ministers discussed the consequences for the world of Russia's military aggression against Ukraine, discussing in particular the emerging global food crisis and the EU's ability to support the world's most affected countries and partners. UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi also took part in the work of the Council.

"Russia's military aggression against Ukraine is a serious violation of international law with a number of negative global consequences, among which the threat to global food security is particularly worrying. The military actions severely disrupted the channels for the supply of agricultural products and thus created conditions for a shortage of important goods. The Bulgarian government, in close cooperation with Ukraine, is taking steps to facilitate and support the export of Ukrainian wheat through the Bulgarian Black Sea port of Varna", said Ambassador Rumen Alexandrov. He supported the EC's proposal for a common European Action Plan, which outlines a way to overcome the severe consequences of the war for countries around the world. It was generally agreed that the EU should use all available tools to help partners in different parts of the world overcome the expected severe consequences of the war in Ukraine. These important EU initiatives include the Global Europe Instrument, the Global Portal Strategy and the Joint Action Team Europe. They have proven their effectiveness in dealing with the sanitary crisis before.

At his meeting with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, the difficult situation with the growing number of displaced persons from Ukraine was discussed. Russian military action has forced more than 6 million Ukrainians to flee their country. High Commissioner Filippo Grandi briefed European ministers on UN action to support the millions of refugees and host countries. Bulgaria is actively involved in supporting Ukrainian refugees, and in addition to national efforts, our country supports international action in the field of the High Commissioner for Refugees, the Red Cross, UNICEF and other UN agencies.

Bulgaria also provides assistance to refugees from the war in Ukraine through the European Civil Protection Mechanism.
