Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Violence and intolerance have no place in Bulgarian society

02 November 2021 News

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemns the attack on the Rainbow Hub community centre in the capital, which it considers an inadmissible manifestation of intolerance and violation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of citizens of the Republic of Bulgaria.

This was stated by the Director General for Global Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ulyana Bogdanska during a meeting with representatives of non-governmental organizations on the occasion of the attack on October 30, 2021 against the Rainbow Hub community centre.

During the meeting, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed regret over the violence. It was emphasized that the protection of human dignity and individual freedom are basic democratic values, and manifestations of homophobia and hatred have no place in Bulgarian society.

The meeting was organized in response to a letter from five leading NGOs to the foreign minister. Possibilities for deepening the interaction between state institutions and the non-governmental sector were discussed in order to counteract such negative phenomena and promote mutual respect, understanding and tolerance.

The Director General for Global Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that one of the priority topics of the foreign policy of the Republic of Bulgaria in the field of human rights is precisely the fight against discrimination and intolerance. In this regard, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls on the responsible institutions to carefully and impartially investigate the case, taking all possible measures to impose the sanctions provided by law.

The representatives of the non-governmental organizations were assured during the meeting that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to create the necessary preconditions for the establishment of an environment free of discrimination, including through joint work with international organizations such as the OSCE, Council of Europe, EU and UN.
