Bulgaria attaches great importance to the issue of preservation of the Bulgarian cultural and historical heritage and of the Bulgarian military cemeteries in the Republic of North Macedonia. For years, our country has been pursuing a policy of search and restoration of the Bulgarian military cemeteries and monuments in the Republic of North Macedonia. For the most part, they are in dire condition as a result of the consistent policy of de-Bulgarization, executed in the past on the territory of today's Republic of North Macedonia.
We have repeatedly called for assistance to the authorities in Skopje, who know that this is one of the painful issues for Bulgaria. An appeal to the authorities in the Republic of North Macedonia for assistance in the search, restoration and protection of the Bulgarian military cemeteries were made also in the Declaration of the 44th National Assembly of Bulgaria, adopted unanimously on October 10th, 2019.
That is why the information about the destruction of two Bulgarian military cemeteries on the territory of the Republic of North Macedonia, submitted to us by the “Macedonia” Foundation, is taken very seriously and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria works actively to clarify the facts and take appropriate action. Honouring the memory of those perished is an universal issue and the approach to it is a sign of the degree of adoption of European values.
