The foreign ministers of NATO discussed the current situation in Afghanistan

20 August 2021 News

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria Svetlan Stoev discussed the latest events in Afghanistan at an extraordinary video conference meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the NATO Member States today, August 20, 2021.

The Bulgarian Minister expressed his gratitude to the allies who, in this complex situation, ensured the smooth functioning of the airport in Kabul and ensured the unimpeded departure from Afghanistan of citizens of allies and partner countries, as well as Afghans who assisted the international forces. Minister Stoev also informed his colleagues about the decision to admit up to 70 Afghan citizens. He stressed the need for a thorough stock of the events in Afghanistan and the possible security consequences, including an increase in the terrorist threat and illegal migration.

During the meeting, the allies agreed that the people of Afghanistan deserve a dignified life in a secure and stable state, building on what has already been achieved in the political, social and economic fields over the past two decades. A appeal was made for the formation of an inclusive and representative government with the full participation of women and minority groups, to execute Afghanistan’s international commitments, to respect human rights and the rule of law, and to ensure that Afghanistan will never become a terrorist haven. The Allies reaffirmed their determination to continue the fight against terrorism.

The meeting ended with the adoption of a joint statement by the ministers on Afghanistan.
