13 July 2021 News

The Director General for Political Affairs, Maya Dobreva, spoke with the representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Bulgaria, Narasimha Rao, on the occasion of the beginning of his term.

During the meeting, Maya Dobreva highlighted the excellent relations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the UNHCR Office and wished success to Narasimha Rao in his work in Bulgaria. "We are ready to continue the good cooperation and to implement concrete joint events on migrant and refugee issues," said the Director-General for Political Affairs. She added that the Bulgarian people are traditionally tolerant of different ethnicities, cultures and religions.

Maya Dobreva commented that it is necessary to constantly improve the work with refugees who find peaceful living conditions in our country. "International cooperation is key to tackling the challenges of migration, especially given the COVID-19 pandemic, the economic crisis and climate change," she said.

For his part, the representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Bulgaria thanked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and all services in our country that deal with the issues of asylum seekers and praised the efforts to care for refugees and the control carried out under the EU's external border. The UNHCR office in Bulgaria will work for the more successful integration in Bulgaria of those who have been granted refugee status, so that they will be more useful on the labor market and will be able to integrate more fully into society.
