The Permanent Representative of the Republic of Bulgaria to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, Ambassador Maria Spasova, presented her letters of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Marija Pejčinović Burić at a formal ceremony on 11 January 2021.

After the credentials handing ceremony, Ambassador Spasova conferred with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe. Ambassador Spasova offered condolences in connection with the earthquake in Croatia. The sides expressed the hope that the health situation in Europe will normalise soon, which will enable the Secretary General of the Council of Europe to pay an official visit to Bulgaria.

Ambassador Spasova reaffirmed Bulgaria’s readiness to continue to support the Council of Europe at this moment that is difficult for the organisation, for the purpose of asserting its fundamental value: human rights, democracy, and rule of law. The Permanent Representative stressed the great importance that Bulgaria attaches to cooperation with the Council of Europe and expressed support for the proposals for a reform of the organisation.

Pejčinović Burić expressed satisfaction with the fine cooperation with Bulgaria and confirmed her desire to visit Bulgaria when the situation permits.
