Bulgaria supports 18 countries with Official Development Assistance of over BGN 5.5 million

04 December 2020 News

Bulgaria provided Official Development Assistance worth more than BGN 5.5 million to 18 countries in 2020. By the end of October, a part of those resources was used to finance bilateral projects and international organizations and others were donated as humanitarian aid.

A considerable share of the assistance was distributed among the countries in the Western Balkans and the Eastern Partnership. A total of 60 projects were financed in the region for the development of education, science, culture, social integration, and the civil society. 43 out of them were related to our long-term foreign political priority of the Euro-Atlantic integration of the Western Balkans.

Bulgaria provided the greatest support to the Republic of North Macedonia by financing 15 projects of theirs at a total value of BGN 897 790. Thanks to that assistance, the building of the Georgi Naumov secondary school was refurbished in Bitola.

Bulgaria supported also Albania, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, and Montenegro with either grants or project financing. Those resources were used to finance activities related to healthcare, education and infrastructure.

The largest approved project financed through the Official Development Assistance was in Albania. Over BGN 1.1 million were allocated for the construction of an asphalt road between the town of Bilisht and the village of Vernik. The beneficiary was the Devoll municipality, Albania.

Bulgaria donated more than half a million BGN for the countries in the Black Sea Region. The funds were distributed among projects in Moldova, Ukraine, Georgia, and Armenia.

The biggest beneficiary of that line of funding was Moldova which was provided a total of BGN 205 645. Almost a half of those resources represented the second tranche of the funding for IT equipment of the District Office of Education, Youth and Sports of the Taraclia Region.

Bulgaria provides resources of close to BGN 2 million also for the containment of humanitarian crises. Again, the main priorities were countries with sustained crises and conflicts and deteriorating humanitarian situation creating an increased migration risk to the country: Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq, Yemen, and others. After the devastating earthquake in 2019, Albania was supported with BGN 195 583 to cope with the aftermath of the disaster.

A donation of the same amount was given within the framework of the Coronavirus Global Response to develop and disseminate a vaccine against COVID-19. In response of the pandemic, a specific humanitarian initiative was launched to provide protective medical equipment (protective clothing, face shields and goggles) manufactured in Bulgaria because of the conviction that the provision of support to the first-line medical staff would produce the quickest tangible results. The approved assistance was provided to our main partners in the Western Balkans, the EU Eastern Partnership and Iraq. Furthermore, the distribution of food packages for the most needy was organized in Albania, the Republic of North Macedonia and Serbia (Western outlands).

Guided by the traditional friendly relations with Lebanon, Bulgaria helped the country with medical and hygiene products in the wake of the explosions at the Port of Beirut.
