Bulgarian Citizens in Germany Can Use Expired IDs for Administrative Purposes until End of 2020

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany informed us that in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic there will be a one-off extension of the term for use of expired personal documents of foreigners, Bulgarian citizens included, on the territory of the country until the end of the year. This will apply solely for administrative purposes.
Bulgarian ID cards and international passports that have expired after March 13, 2020 will be accepted as valid in Germany up until December 31, 2020, for internal state purposes (extending residence). The one-off extension of the documents is primarily to prevent any problems with the stay and residence of foreign citizens who are already on the territory of the Federal Republic.
Back in spring, in connection with the COVID-19 crisis, Germany announced that Bulgarian personal ID documents expiring after March 13, 2020 would be deemed valid for allowing our fellow citizens to leave Germany for their homeland. October 31 was the cut-off date, and past it Bulgarian citizens were not to be allowed to cross the German state border with expired IDs.
We hereby inform you that the three Bulgarian consular services in Germany – the one at the Bulgarian Embassy in Berlin and the General Consulates in Frankfurt and Munich – accept applications for renewal of Bulgarian ID cards and international passports. Bulgarian citizens planning to leave Germany by October 31 by plane with expired documents are advised to check out the policy of the relevant airlines to avoid boarding denial.
