Bulgaria welcomes the efforts of the EU and of the international community to alleviate the economic and financial burden on the African countries as a result of the coronavirus crisis.
That was a highlight in the remarks made by Mr. Milen Lyutskanov, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs at the informal video meeting of the EU Development Ministers (General Affairs Council – Development).
„Africa needs support in coping with the existing challenges. In this respect, we express our appreciation of and solidarity with the EU efforts to alleviate the big economic and financial burden on African countries. Governments need to develop long-term economic incentives for combatting the crisis on the basis of the principle of a stronger economy so as to ultimately safeguard the health and wellbeing of the citizens, to contribute to coping with the climate change challenges, and to build sustainable and inclusive societies“, said Deputy Minister Lyutskanov.
Another topic discussed at the meeting was the development of the negotiations on the future partnership agreement between the EU and the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) (the „Post-Cotonou Agreement“). With regard to the future EU-OACPS partnership agreement, Deputy Minister Lyutskanov emphasized that Bulgaria supported the EU position on the need for binding return and readmission clauses in the agreement.
The representatives of the Member States agreed unanimously that the EU had to support the sustainable recovery and development of the African continent and to continue the effective cooperation with the African countries with a view to managing migration and addressing the root causes of that phenomenon.
The situation in Belarus was briefly discussed as well.
