Minister Georgiev Participates in UNICEF Youth Hackathon Digital Media Literacy Solutions: My Right to an Opinion

“We are happy that today’s event takes place under the auspices of Mrs. Zaharieva in her capacity as champion of the UNICEF initiative Generation Unlimited. We are grateful to UNICEF and the partners organizing the event and to all young people for their engagement and commitment,” Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Georg Georgiev said, speaking on behalf of Ekaterina Zaharieva (the event’s sponsor and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, at the UNICEF Youth Hackathon Digital Media Literacy Solutions: My Right to an Opinion. The event was held at the Sofia Tech Park on 17 July 2020.
In his opening remarks Georgiev greeted all young people who took part in the initiative. “I believe that sensitivity to the media and to the content they produce is extremely important to young people and also to the entire active public today. I am happy that there are many young people who are socially engaged in producing content of value,”
Georg Georgiev expressed certainty that quite a few would choose journalism as their vocation. “There are quite a few people who, by making themselves heard through the prism of the media, which is so important to each society, would make an important contribution to keeping every one of us, every engaged and active member of society, informed and enabling us to make adequate decisions using information.”
The Deputy Minister urged the young people to approach the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in which they could find a friend and partner but also an institution that would support them to the best of its abilities.
Dr. Jane Muita was the main organizer of the hackathon. Kristina Hristova, chair of the Coalition for Media Literacy, UNICEF representative for Bulgaria, was another organizer. The event was hosted by Todor Mladenov, Executive Director of Sofia Tech Park.
The ranking of the teams was as follows: Interactive Website for Identifying Fake News - winner in the Applicability category; Campaign for Ethical Coverage of Incidents - winner in the Innovative Project category; Online Cybersecurity Game - winner in the Attractive Presentation category; Teenager Website for Combating Cyberbullying - winner in the Original Idea category; Online Channel for Promoting Young People’s Opinions and Projects - winner in the Best Potential for Change category.
