Nikola Dimitrov: Borisov was the European leader who provided an impetus to our European integration

01 February 2019 News

‘The Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov gave the initial impetus for all the support we have been receiving for our Euro-Atlantic integration. His was the message: "Europe helped us, now let’s help our neighbors".’ It was with these words that Nikola Dimitrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Macedonia, addressed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ekaterina Zaharieva of Bulgaria. The two met and talked in Bucharest, in the framework of the informal meeting of the EU foreign ministers with their counterparts from the Western Balkans.

‘We’ve done a lot in one year, but there remains more to be done. After the business forum in Skopje, I can confirm that there is enormous interest in your country on the part of the Bulgarian business sector. But before that, we must fix our roads, our rail links, and promote cultural exchange,’ Deputy Prime Minister Zaharieva said. As an example of the excellent ties between citizens of both countries she cited the performance of ‘Brothers Karamazov’ by Dostoevsky, which Dejan Projkovski, a theater director from the Republic of Macedonia, is putting on at the National Theater in Sofia. Projkovski is an alumnus of the National Academy for Theater and Film Arts “Krastyo Sarafov”.

Mr. Dimitrov promised to come to Sofia especially for the opening night of the play, which will feature eminent actors like Vlado Penev, Deyan Donkov, Marin Yanev and Anna Papadopoulou.

‘Together we attained a new spirit in our relations. Thank you for not just being the first to recognize our country, but for also being now the first to greenlight the signing of our NATO accession protocol,’ Nikola Dimitrov went on to say.

The two ministers are scheduled to meet shortly in Sofia to prepare the next joint session of the governments of both countries, this time to be hosted by Bulgaria.
