Minister Zaharieva receives Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran

30 January 2019 News

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ekaterina Zaharieva received today the Deputy Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran Dr. Seyyed Abbas Araghchi, with whom she discussed bilateral relations and relevant topics on the international agenda.

The parties referred to the over 120 years-old formal diplomatic relations between the two countries as a sign of the lasting ties between Bulgaria and Iran. Minister Zaharieva noted the usefulness of high-level political dialog and reminded her guest of the visit by Prime Minister Boyko Borissov to Tehran in 2016.

‘Now is the time to take advantage of the momentum in our relations. The conducting of political consultations is a good opportunity and important mechanism for discussing all matters of mutual interest, as well as any other relevant subjects,’ said Minister Zaharieva.

The Iranian diplomat seconded that opinion and expressed his wishes for the two countries to turn the various challenges into opportunities.

In the course of the conversation, Minister Zaharieva reiterated the EU position in support of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on the Iranian nuclear program. She underscored that keeping that plan in place would enable the parties to discuss a host of other important regional and international issues.

Deputy Minister Araghchi voiced his expectations that the EU would honor the commitments undertaken by force of the Plan.
