Marking the National Day of Bulgaria in Milan

06 March 2018 News

The 3rd of March, Bulgaria’s National Day, and the 140th anniversary of its Liberation were marked in Milan with a celebration organized for the Bulgarian expat community in Northern Italy. The event, hosted by the Consulate General in Milan, was attended by almost 300 guests.

Taking part in the celebration were members of the three main organizations of Bulgarians in Lombardy: the Bulgarian Association for Cultural Exchange, represented by its chairperson, the Association for Bulgarian Culture, and members of the ‘Here Bulgaria’ Language and Cultural Center. The event also featured an exhibition titled ‘Liberty and National Awareness’, comprising reproductions of the most famous paintings related to the Russo-Turkish War of Liberation (1877-78), the revolutionary and the National Awakening movements. The exhibition was made possible with the support of the Bulgarian foundation Patria.

Consul General Rossen Roufev delivered an official message of greeting following the performance of the national anthem of Bulgaria. The festive evening featured a diverse program of folk dances and songs performed by the Nashentsi and Ritmika folk troupes in Milan. To present the Bulgarian folklore traditions the organizers had invited Vanya Koudeva, who herself is a singer and vocal pedagogue. Both our fellow Bulgarians and the Italian guests joined in the traditional Bulgarian horo (circle dance).

Special guests of honour at the event were Members of Parliament Kristian Vigenin, Chairman of both the Bulgaria-Italy Parliamentary Friendship Group and the parliamentary Committee for European Affairs, and Boris Yachev, Chairman of the Anti-Corruption Committee of the Bulgarian National Assembly. Actively joining the event were Bulgarian researchers working at the foremost scientific research center of the European Commission in Europe, located in the town of Ispra.
