George Georgiev delivers lecture at the University of Cincinnati

06 March 2018 News

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs George Georgiev delivered a lecture yesterday at the City University of Cincinnati on the subject of ‘The priorities of Bulgaria during its Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2018’.

Speaking before American students, George Georgiev pointed out that to this country, the Presidency is both a challenge and a responsibility, because this will be a period of seminal decisions that concern the very future of the Community, such as Brexit. ‘Bulgaria joined the Union 10 years ago, and today we can already participate in formulating its policies in key areas such as the economy and finance, migration, security and the energy sector,’ Deputy Minister Georgiev underscored.

In his expose, the Bulgarian deputy Foreign Minister highlighted the three pillars of the program for the Bulgarian presidency: stability, security, solidarity. He underscored that this country is working actively towards consensus on important all-European matters, greater competitiveness and keeping in place the cohesion policy of the European Union. ‘One of the priorities in which the Bulgarian Presidency invests a lot of energy is the European perspective and connectivity of the Western Balkans. We must all realize that investing in the security and prosperity of that region means investing in the entire European project. Our motto is “United We Stand Strong”. We are sparing no effort to contribute to the security and unity of Europe,’ Georgiev also told his young audience.

Deputy Minister George Georgiev also spoke with members of the Bulgarian academic community working at the University of Cincinnati.
