Yuri Sterk accepts EU Agency for Fundamental Rights Director Michael O’Flaherty

20 September 2017 News

Deputy Foreign Minister Yuri Sterk had a working meeting with EU Agency for Fundamental Rights Director Michael O’Flaherty on 19 September 2017.

At the meeting, the sides discussed the areas in which the Agency will cooperate with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU next year. The fight against anti-Semitism and the language of hatred together with the rights of children and people with disabilities are among the priorities of the Bulgarian Presidency’s programme. The two considered the possibilities for interaction both within the framework of the working formats of the Council and during the events of the calendar of the Presidency in Sofia. The work of the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights is of great practical value for the law-enforcement bodies because it provides studies based on a comparative analysis of the legislative framework and on the application of the legal framework in the Union’s member states.

The meeting was a part of Michael O’Flaherty’s visit to Sofia between 18 and 20 September, during which he met with the Minister of Labour and Social Policy, Deputy Justice Ministers, the Ombudsman of the Republic of Bulgaria, as well as with and representatives of the institutions and the civic organisations working in the area of human rights protection.
