Deputy Prime Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva discusses situation in Libya with EU counterparts

19 September 2017 News

Deputy Prime Minister for Judicial Reform and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ekaterina Zaharieva has discussed the situation in Lybia during an informal meeting with EU counterparts, who have gathered for the UN General Assembly's Session in New York. The event was held at the initiative of EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini.

The ministers were briefed on the situation by Ghassan Salame, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya. He thanked the EU member states for the support to the Stabilization Facility for Libya given that the Union is the biggest donor in this country.

Ghassan Salame’s Action Plan which will be announced during the UN Session will present a timeframe for reforms.

The top diplomats took note of the decrease of the migrant pressure on Italy’s coast but commented that this is not a sustainable solution of the problem and is just a sign that traffickers have changed the “business model”. Thanks to the cooperation between the EU, the International Organization for Migration, the UN High Commissioner, and UNICEF, more than 7,000 Libyan migrants have returned voluntarily to their country.

During the past two months, there have been positive developments regarding the political dialogue in Libya starting with the declaration signed in Paris on 25 July 2017 after a meeting between Libyan Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj and Gen. Khalifa Haftar (leader of the so-called Libyan National Army).
