Dozens of visitors get acquainted with the Ministry of Foreign Affair’s work within the European Heritage Days

Today, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs opened its doors to visitors within the European Heritage Days – Sofia 2017 initiative, which took place on September 16-17. On Sunday, over 100 inhabitants and guests of the capital chose to dedicate part of their time to get familiarised with the operation of the institution.

Deputy Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev met and talked with the visitors at the Doors Open Day. He underscored that the purpose of the initiative is to render the institution ever more open and more accessible to the Bulgarian citizens. “This is namely the workplace of people with considerable contribution to Bulgaria’s solid foreign political positions on the international stage,” Deputy Minister Georgiev also said and thanked the guests for their interest in the Ministry’s operation.

The visitors learned what kind of assistance the Foreign Ministry can provide to Bulgarian nationals abroad in crisis situations. Within the Doors Open Day, the visitors had the chance to get familiarised with the rich arts fund of the institution and to learn curious details about diplomatic protocol. The decision-making process at the EU Council, the priorities of the upcoming Bulgarian Presidency of the Council and Bulgaria’s active role in affirming the European perspective of the countries of the Western Balkans were presented as well. The Minister’s office and the Ministry’s conference halls were also open for the guests.

The European Heritage Days initiative is supported by the Council of Europe and the European Commission and takes place in September each year. Millions of people from almost all countries on our Continent take part in it. The first cultural heritage days were organized in 1984 in France by the Ministry of Culture at the initiative of Minister Jack Lang. Since 1991, they have been known as the European Heritage Days. In a number of countries, including Bulgaria, they have a great success among the people offering them a chance to visit prestigious sites the access to which is usually limited. The initiative contributes to raising the citizens’ awareness of the importance of the protection and promotion of cultural heritage.
