Statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in connection with the launch of a ballistic missile by DPRK on July 4th, 2017

05 July 2017 News
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria expresses its indignation at the launch by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) on 4 July 2017 of a ballistic missile, which was declared by Pyongyang as inter-continental. That new serious violation of the United Nations Security Council resolutions further escalates tensions on the Korean Peninsula and undermines security not only in the region, but also at international level.

We urge the DPRK to commit to the resumption of constructive dialogue with the international community for the nuclear disarmament of the Korean Peninsula and achieving peace and stability in North-East Asia.

The Republic of Bulgaria insists that the DPRK refrain from any actions that could further increase tensions in the region. The DPRK should abandon once and for all its nuclear and ballistic programme in a complete and irreversible manner, fully complying with its international obligations under the respective UN Security Council resolutions.

We call upon the international community to focus its efforts on preventing the further development of the DPRK’s nuclear and ballistic programmes. We believe in the need for an urgent convening of the UN Security Council and support upcoming deliberations in the EU on the situation in the region with a view to finding appropriate solutions.
