22 May 2017 News

The Deputy Prime Minister for Judicial Reform and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ekaterina Zaharieva is attending the Second Rhodes Conference for Security and Stability, which is taking place in Rhodes, Greece on 22 and 23 May 2017.

The Conference basically aims to continue the efforts for establishing a positive agenda for regional cooperation and mutual understanding among the participating countries in the present-day conditions of crises, challenges and conflicts. Taking part are twenty delegations from Europe, the Middle East, the Gulf and organisations such as the League of Arab States and the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf. Indonesia was granted observer status.

Minister Zaharieva hailed the hosts’ efforts to expand their initiative and hold a Second Rhodes Conference. She made a special mention of the positive agenda, thanks to which the forum in Rhodes stands out prominently among a number of other initiatives.

The participants in this meeting are expected to outline the challenges and problems in the region as well as to identify the areas of future cooperation for addressing them. Particular importance is attached to regional security cooperation, the efforts to overcome the causes of radicalisation among young people. “The inclusion of the topics of education, culture and the environment and successful cooperation in these areas will hold out prospects for youth development and self-fulfilment in the Middle East countries,” Zaharieva said. “This is a constructive approach to the complicated and complex issue of migration. Bulgaria is ready to make its own active contribution to the ongoing initiatives and work for their expansion,” she emphasised.

A joint declaration outlining the next steps is expected to be adopted at the end of the Conference.
