Minister Daniel Mitov confers with the Secretary General of the BSEC Permanent International Secretariat

30 November 2016 News

Minister of Foreign Affairs Daniel Mitov conferred with Michael B. Christides, Secretary General of the International Secretariat of the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC). The two discussed the opportunities for deepening cooperation among Member States, the key priorities on the Organization’s agenda, as well as the need of certain reforms in its activity.

“Bulgaria has always supported and will continue to support the projects and ideas intended to achieve fruitful and effective results for the extended Black Sea region,” the chief Bulgarian diplomat said. He stressed the role of the BSEC as a factor of building confidence, stability and security in the region. “We must work in active cooperation because when we are strong economically, politically and socially we can meet the current challenges,” Daniel Mitov added.

For his part, the BSEC Secretary General stressed the importance of steering the reforms at the Organization towards achieving greater effectiveness and implementing particular projects of Member States.

In this context, Daniel Mitov and Michael Christides concurred that one of the principal objectives of the Organization is to ensure greater visibility and a practical focus of its activity. They identified the holding of effective rotating BSEC chairmanship-in-office and extending the term of the chairmanship from six months to one year as a step in this direction. Ways to improve the financing of the Organization’s activity, as part of its reform process, were also discussed during the conversation.
