Working visit of Minister Daniel Mitov to Paris

06 September 2016 News

During a working visit to Paris, Bulgarian Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov conferred with French Foreign Affairs and International Development Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault.

The two chief diplomats agreed that coping with the migrant crisis is an exceedingly serious common challenge to the entire European Union. Minister Mitov presented to his counterpart Bulgaria's position regarding the migrant crisis and the challenges to our country, especially along the southern border. "The idea that Europe has external borders and they belong to Europe as a whole is a project behind which we must all consolidate. France and Germany share border with the Republic of Turkey and that is the border of Bulgaria and Greece," Minister Mitov said at the meeting with his French counterpart.

"The border security issue is very important, and we must enhance the role of Frontex and the protection of these borders," Minister Ayrault pointed out.

The two foreign ministers discussed the crises in the Middle East and Ukraine and stressed the need of implementing the Minsk Agreements.

The talks included also the forthcoming Brexit and the future of the EU, the upcoming Bratislava Summit on 16 September, Europe's energy security, counterterrorism, and the Union's common defence policy. The two ministers agreed that Europe needs diversification of the energy sources. Minister Mitov informed his counterpart on the Bulgarian Balkan Hub project and the progress of the interconnector projects with neighbouring countries.

Minister Ayrault emphasized the importance of the security of gas supplies to Europe. The two concurred on the importance of keeping the unity of the 27 EU Member States.

The Foreign Ministers agreed that bilateral relations are at an exceptionally high level and Minister Mitov invited his counterpart to visit Bulgaria at his convenience.
