MFA press release on the current situation in the Republic of Turkey

24 July 2016 News

The situation in the Republic of Turkey remains highly unstable. Following the declared state of emergency, the measures to strengthen control of the security forces and increase the powers of the executive are being gradually introduced as of 21.07.2016, 01.00 am.

The MFA recommendations as of 21 July, 6.00 pm  remain in force until further notice.

Given today’s rally organized by the opposition Republican People's Party, backed by the ruling Justice and Development Party, MFA advises Bulgarian citizens to avoid visits to Taksim Square and the surrounding areas in the evening hours of 24.07.2016.

Measures currently taken by the authorities in connection with the declared state of emergency do not directly affect the security of the Bulgarian citizens. The requirement to carry personal documents is still valid due to the frequent inspections and detention of persons who cannot verify their identity. Bulgarian citizens must strictly comply with the instructions of the police.

As of 24.07.2016 there is no change in the situation on the Bulgarian-Turkish border checkpoints. Traffic in both directions is normal for the season, but the control at the entry and exit points from the Turkish side is strengthened. There are no additional requirements related to the border crossing of Bulgarian citizens.

Today there is stronger policing at the entry and exit points of Edirne.
