General Affairs Council adopted conclusions on the situation in the Republic of Macedonia

23 June 2015 News

EU foreign ministers adopted conclusions on the situation in the Republic of Macedonia at today’s General Affairs Council meeting held in Luxembourg. Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov participated in the meeting.

In the conclusions, adopted unanimously, the Council urges the political parties in the country to assume their respective responsibilities and take immediate measures towards a sustainable solution, constructively engage in political dialogue and continue efforts to restore trust in the institution. The Council calls upon all parties to honour their 2 June agreement and implement all recommendations of the European Commission, starting with the urgent reform priorities, in relation to systemic rule of law issues.

The conclusions welcome the agreement by local party leaders to remain committed to the country's EU accession process, including through the strengthening of good-neighborly relations. Ministers will continue to monitor the situation closely over the coming months. The Republic of Macedonia is expected to report on the achieved progress at the July meeting of the Stabilisation and Association Council between the EU and the Republic of Macedonia.
