03 February 2014

On 03 Jan 2014, at 3.08 am the Greek island of Kefalonia - Ionian Sea, 294 kilometers west of Athens and 345 km southwest of Thessaloniki,  was struck by a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 on the Richter scale. It was felt mainly in Western Greece in the cities of Patras , Amaliada, Missolonghi, Pyrgos, Navpaktos,  as well as in the administrative regions of Achaia, Ilia and Etoloakarnania. An aftershock followed ten minutes later with a magnitude of 4.5 on the Richter scale. The earthquake caused damage in the town of Lixouri, without any casualties.

There are no injured Bulgarian citizens.

According to an information from the Seismological  Institute  at the National Observatory of Greece, the earthquake is a consequence of an activated after the earthquake of 26 Jan 2014 (5.8 on the Richter scale) seismic process that is expected to continue.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends the Bulgarian citizens to consider the above information when traveling in the area and to follow strictly the instructions of the local authorities.
