The situation in Istanbul and travel advice to Bulgarian citizens

12 September 2013

The situation in Istanbul in recent days is once again tense. According to the Consulate General of the Republic of Bulgaria to Istanbul, in the evening hours of 10-11 September in the area of Taksim Square, the European section of Istiklal blvd. and in the Asian part of the Kadıköyneighbourhood, mass protests against the government's plans for the reconstruction of parks in Istanbul and Ankara have erupted again. Rallies were dispersed by the police use of force and tear gas.

In this regard, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends that Bulgarian citizens who have to travel to Istanbul or are already in the city, to avoid these areas, especially in the late afternoon and evening hours and on weekends, and to refrain from attending places of mass gathering of people and from participation in protests.
