Disaster situation in Canada
26 June 2013According to the Embassy of Bulgaria in Ottawa, an emergency has been declared in severalcities in Alberta and southern parts of the province of Manitoba, as a result of heavy rains and record rising of the levels of the Bow and Elbow rivers.
More than 100 000 peoplehave been evacuated in Calgary and other cities of the province of Alberta. Residents of towns along the Saskatchewan river also have been warned to leave their homes because of the expected overflowing of the river.
The floods have left hundreds of thousands of households without electricity. There have been disruptions totransport links in the affected areas, including the Trans-Canadian highway. Rail transport has been suspended. Schools are closed.
Three victims have been reported. The military have been deployed to assist those affected by the situation. According to local authorities, these are the most devastating floods in the region for the past 100 years.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises Bulgarians in the country not to travel in the affected areas, to keep themselves informed about the current situation and to strictly follow the advice of the local authorities.
