Advice to Bulgarian citizens travelling and residing in Bahrain

19 February 2013

Protests in connection with the second anniversary of the events of February 14 2011 have led to a heightening of tensions and confrontations between protesters and police in Bahrain. Street protests are held regularly, mainly in Shia areas. There is a possibility of spontaneous protest actions, accompanied by violence, blocking of roads and arson in various areas.

Given the complexity of the situation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends that Bulgarians staying in the country avoid places where protesters gather and minimise travelling in the event of mass protests.

Although there have not been any cases recorded of targeted attacks on foreigners, heightened caution when travelling to Bahrain is necessary. Use only officially registered taxi companies. It is not recommended that women use taxis unaccompanied, especially in the evening hours.
