Information about a group of Bulgarian citizens working near the Gaza Strip

16 November 2012

Bulgaria’s Ambassador to Israel, Yuri Shterk, this morning visited a group of 17 Bulgarian citizens working on projects in the city of Netivot, near the Gaza Strip. The Bulgarians are in the country on the basis of an agreement on brokerage and temporary employment between Bulgaria and Israel. All of the Bulgarians are in good health.

Two of the Bulgarian citizens told Ambassador Shterk that they want to return to Bulgaria. Currently they are in the Bulgarian Embassy in Tel Aviv, from whence they will be assisted to return home. The Bulgarian Embassy has contacted the Crisis Centre of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the State of Israel as well as the Office of Civil Defence, which will conduct on-site inspections. Ambassador Shterk requested the possible transfer of the Bulgarian citizens to another workplace.

The Bulgarian Embassy and Foreign Ministry will continue to monitor the situation and to provide possible assistance. In connection with the escalation of the situation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterates its call to Bulgarian citizens to refrain from travelling in the region of southern Israel and settlements near the Gaza Strip.
