Bulgaria and Croatia share common interest in strengthening security in the region

25 May 2015 News

“Bulgaria and Croatia are connected by centuries-old cultural and historical ties and this is a stable ground on which our bilateral relations are developing in the past decade as friends, partners and allies in the EU and NATO,” said Minister Daniel Mitov at a joint press conference with Vesna Pusić, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Croatia. She is paying an official visit to Sofia at the invitation of her Bulgarian counterpart.

The top diplomats discussed cooperation in the region and current issues on the European agenda, reaffirming that Bulgaria and Croatia have similar positions on many of the current topics and these positions can be successfully defended within the EU if both countries speak in one voice.

Minister Daniel Mitov thanked the Republic of Croatia for supporting Bulgaria's position that the burden of the migration pressure should be shared among all EU Member States. The burden and the responsibility for the people coming to the EU should be equally distributed on the basis of clear criteria, said Minister Pusić.

Bulgaria and Croatia share common interest in strengthening the security in the region. One of the great benefits of the EU membership is that it allows countries such as Bulgaria and Croatia, located in the same area without being immediate neighbors, to assume political responsibility for the stability of the region, said Vesna Pusić.  Regional peace and stability, as well as the accession of countries from the region to the EU and NATO, after meeting all the necessary criteria, have no alternative, said Minister Mitov.

Among the topics of today's conversation was also the situation in the Republic of Macedonia. "A clear and firm commitment of the entire EU is needed in the process of the country's exit from the political crisis and in the entire transition period until the establishment of a lasting political stability guaranteeing both the civil and inter-ethnic peace in the Republic of Macedonia, as well as the country's territorial integrity," Daniel Mitov said. This will be a long process and we are ready to assist, but the political actors in the country are those responsible for launching reforms and maintaining stability in the Republic of Macedonia, he added.

The two foreign ministers pledged to work together to promote the development of trade and economic relations and the realization of the untapped potential in the economic sphere.
