Daniel Mitov: Georgia is part of Europe and it can rely on our support

26 February 2015 News

For us Georgia is part of Europe and it can rely on our full support on the path to European and Euro-Atlantic integration. We must continue to work closely in order to expand the tools and mechanisms through which we can provide expert help and share our experience, said Minister Daniel Mitov at today’s meeting with a Georgian delegation led by Parliament Speaker David Usupashvili, who is paying an official visit to Sofia.

For his part, David Usupashvili thanked for Bulgaria’s consistent support. Georgian people highly appreciate these gestures of friendship and support, and I believe that our relations will continue to develop it that direction, he said. For us European integration is not just a political choice, but a cultural choice, part of our national identity, Usupashvili added.

Minister Mitov praised Georgia’s steady progress in implementing the Visa Liberalisation Action Plan. This gives us reason to expect that at the upcoming Summit in Riga Georgia will come closer to the visa-free travel, he said.

Foreign Minister reaffirmed the support of Bulgaria for Georgia's aspirations for NATO membership. He reiterated the position of Bulgaria in support of  NATO’s Open door policy and expressed confidence that the accession of Georgia is a matter of time, and it will bring more security and stability to the entire region.

Daniel Mitov and David Usupashvili reaffirmed the excellent state of bilateral relations, adding that there is still untapped potential for their expansion. They agreed that it is necessary to update and amend the legal and contractual basis between the two countries. As areas of cooperation they outlined energy, culture, science and education, transport, agriculture, regional development and others.
Among the topics of conversation were also the situation in Ukraine and the relations with Russia, regional security, the threat of international terrorism, including the so-called “Islamic State.”
