25 September 2014 News

On 24 September, Minister Daniel Mitov met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, within the framework of the UN General Assembly’s 69th general debate in New York.

During the conversation the two top diplomats discussed ways to boost bilateral cooperation by using available mechanisms and tapping the full potential of the relations. Minister Mitov noted the importance of joint projects, particularly in the field of energy supply, such as the construction of  Bulgaria-Turkey gas interconnector.

Minister Mitov emphasized that the facilities built on the Bulgarian side of the common border are temporary and should not have negative impact on bilateral relations, because they are part of the Bulgarian government’s efforts to deal with migration pressure. He pointed out that it is essential  to sign the tripartite border control agreement between Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria. For his part, Minister Çavuşoğlu expressed commitment to invigorate more active contacts between the competent institutions in the two countries towards active joint efforts to handle the increasing migration flows through both countries.

The two ministers discussed also the situation in Syria and Iraq and expressed their firm support for the international efforts against terrorism, particularly against the Islamic State militant group.

Bulgarian Foreign Minister also met with his Macedonian counterpart Nikola Poposki. They discussed matters of bilateral cooperation, as well as the European and Euro-Atlantic prospects of the Republic of Macedonia.

The two ministers confirmed the plans to continue the expert-level negotiations on the Treaty on Good-neighbourly Relations and Co-operation, saying that the next meeting of the working groups of the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs will be held in the autumn of 2014.

Daniel Mitov and Nikola Poposki described as a positive step the signing of a joint letter of February 19 to European Enlargement  Commissioner Štefan Füle and European Regional Policy Commissioner Johannes Hahn concerning the funding of the construction of Corridor 8. They concurred that the project is of bilateral, regional and all-European importance.
