Mladić arrest opens the way for a faster EU integration of Serbia
26 May 2011 News
The arrest of war crimes suspect Ratko Mladić is very good news for Serbia and for the whole region. It provides, after nearly 16 years, the opportunity for justice to triumph and for the victims and their relatives to witness a fair sentence and punishment for the crimes. Mladić’s arraigning before the International Tribunal is a proof that criminal deeds against humanity cannot go unpunished. The efforts of the Serbian authorities have brought results and there can be no more doubt as to their full cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia.
Serbia must now persevere with the reform agenda in order to be granted EU candidate status as soon as possible with a view of starting accession negotiations. Bulgaria stands ready to help Serbia in this process in the name of the European future of Serbian people and the whole region.
